What Is the 7th House in Astrology?

The 7th house is the part of a natal chart traditionally associated with one-to-one relationships: committed partnership, marriage, contracts, collaboration and the people who meet you as counterparts. It does not predict a specific partner or relationship outcome.

Its starting point is the Descendant, the angle directly opposite the Ascendant or Rising sign. The sign there describes a relationship style; its traditional ruling planet shows another layer by revealing where that planet falls in your chart. Planets in the 7th House can add emphasis, but an empty house is still a complete and meaningful placement.

How to Find Your 7th House

Use your birth date, exact birth time and birthplace. The calculator establishes your Ascendant, locates the Descendant 180° opposite it, then reads the sign and its traditional ruler.

  1. Find your Ascendant (Rising sign).
  2. Locate the Descendant, 180° opposite your Ascendant.
  3. Identify the sign on your 7th House and its ruling planet.

For example, if your Rising sign is Scorpio, your Descendant is Taurus. Taurus is traditionally ruled by Venus, so Venus is your 7th House ruler. To take the interpretation further, look at Venus’s sign and house in your natal chart.

How Our 7th House Calculator Works

This calculator uses the tropical zodiac and your date, local birth time, birthplace coordinates and time zone to calculate your Ascendant and Descendant. It then identifies the sign opposite the Ascendant, applies traditional Western rulership, and locates that ruler among the chart’s natal planets.

It shows the ten major planets, from the Sun through Pluto, that fall in your 7th House. Your result also names the house system used. At very high latitudes, your chart may use a different house system; your result will name it. In Whole Sign houses, the 7th House begins at 0° of its sign while the Descendant remains its own exact angle, so the result shows those ideas separately rather than treating them as the same degree.

What Is Your 7th House Ruler?

Your 7th House ruler is the traditional planet assigned to the sign on your Descendant. It is not automatically your chart ruler. This tool shows the ruler’s sign, degree, house, motion and essential dignity when available, so the answer does not stop at a planet name.

Read the ruler in three steps. First, the planet describes the function involved: Venus relates and values, Mars acts and pursues, Mercury exchanges, Jupiter expands, and Saturn commits or structures. Second, the ruler’s sign describes how that function tends to operate. Third, its house identifies a life area where seventh-house themes may become especially visible.

For example, Taurus on the Descendant makes Venus the traditional ruler. Venus in Virgo can bring a practical, detail-aware style to relationship themes; Venus in the 10th House can connect those themes with career, reputation or public responsibility. This connects the sign, ruler and house shown in your chart; it is not a prediction about a specific relationship.

Traditional Western rulership uses Mars for Scorpio, Saturn for Aquarius and Jupiter for Pisces. Modern astrology also associates those signs with Pluto, Uranus and Neptune. We keep the traditional ruler as the primary calculation and show the modern association separately, rather than merging two different systems into one answer.

7th House Signs and Their Meanings

The sign on the Descendant describes a pattern or tone, not a promise about who you will meet. Read it with the ruler and the rest of the chart.

7th House in Aries

Traditional ruler: Mars

Partnership may ask for directness, courage and room for two distinct people to act. You may value a counterpart who speaks plainly, respects autonomy and does not confuse closeness with control. The growth edge is keeping initiative alive while making space for mutual decisions and repair.

7th House in Taurus

Traditional ruler: Venus

Trust can grow through consistency, tangible care and a pace that lets commitment take root. Shared values, reliability and physical or material security may carry real emotional weight. The growth edge is allowing necessary change without treating every disruption as a threat to the bond.

7th House in Gemini

Traditional ruler: Mercury

Conversation, flexibility and mental companionship can keep one-to-one bonds alive. You may be drawn to partners who remain curious, responsive and able to exchange ideas through everyday life. The growth edge is staying present through quieter periods rather than needing constant novelty to feel connected.

7th House in Cancer

Traditional ruler: Moon

Partnership may feel strongest when it offers belonging, protection and a dependable private life. Emotional availability, family patterns and the feeling of being cared for can be especially meaningful. The growth edge is naming needs directly, so care does not become silent overgiving or fear of separation.

7th House in Leo

Traditional ruler: Sun

Warmth, loyalty and being openly valued can be central to the relationship experience. A bond may thrive on affection, celebration and genuine pride in each other’s creative expression. The growth edge is sustaining ordinary care after the spotlight fades, without making recognition the only proof of love.

7th House in Virgo

Traditional ruler: Mercury

Care may be recognized through reliability, helpfulness and attention to ordinary life together. Shared routines, follow-through and a willingness to solve real problems can feel intimate. The growth edge is using discernment with kindness, so practical support does not slide into constant correction or impossible standards.

7th House in Libra

Traditional ruler: Venus

Fairness, mutual regard and the craft of meeting each other halfway can matter deeply. You may notice imbalance quickly and value a relationship that feels like a genuine partnership. The growth edge is voicing preferences and conflict honestly, rather than preserving surface harmony at the cost of your side of the scale.

7th House in Scorpio

Traditional ruler: Mars

Partnership can call for honesty, emotional depth and a careful relationship to intimacy and power. Surface-level relating or unclear loyalty may feel unsatisfying; trust can matter more than easy appearances. The growth edge is seeking depth with boundaries, allowing vulnerability and repair without turning intensity into a test of devotion.

7th House in Sagittarius

Traditional ruler: Jupiter

Shared meaning, candor and room to keep expanding can help a bond feel true. Travel, learning, belief or a wider horizon may become part of how partnership stays alive. The growth edge is building commitment that supports freedom, rather than treating every responsibility as a restriction or escape as growth.

7th House in Capricorn

Traditional ruler: Saturn

Long-term effort, respect and the ability to build something durable may define partnership themes. Reliability under real-world pressure, shared goals and mature follow-through can feel deeply romantic. The growth edge is letting tenderness and need exist within the structure, so duty or achievement does not replace emotional closeness.

7th House in Aquarius

Traditional ruler: Saturn

Equality, friendship and enough space for individuality can be part of lasting connection. You may value a partner who respects difference, shared ideals and a relationship chosen freely rather than owned. The growth edge is remaining emotionally available, not using distance as the only way to protect independence.

7th House in Pisces

Traditional ruler: Jupiter

Sensitivity, imagination and clear boundaries can shape how partnership and devotion are understood. Emotional attunement, creativity or spiritual kinship may feel central to a bond. The growth edge is holding compassion alongside practical clarity, so idealization, rescue patterns or vagueness do not obscure what is genuinely sustainable.

Planets in the 7th House

Planets placed in house seven can make their own functions especially visible in one-to-one bonds. They add emphasis to the Descendant sign and its ruler; they do not replace either. A fuller reading also considers a planet’s sign, aspects, motion and the person’s actual relationships.

  • Sun: identity, visibility and the need to be recognized can become important within partnership.
  • Moon: emotional safety, care and responsiveness may be especially felt through close bonds.
  • Mercury: communication, negotiation and shared curiosity can take a central role.
  • Venus: attraction, reciprocity, values and the wish for harmony may be emphasized.
  • Mars: desire, initiative, boundaries and conflict style may become more visible.
  • Jupiter and Saturn: can respectively enlarge themes of growth and belief, or bring responsibility, limits and long-term work.
  • Uranus, Neptune and Pluto: can add themes of independence, idealism or depth and transformation, alongside their wider generational context.

This calculator limits the list to the ten major planets from Sun through Pluto, rather than mixing asteroids, nodes and other points into a result labelled “Planets.” Seeing no planets here is a complete result, not an error.

What If Your 7th House Is Empty?

An empty 7th House is common. It does not mean you will never marry, cannot sustain partnership, or have less meaningful relationships. It means no major planet from this calculator’s list falls in that house under the displayed house system.

Start with the Descendant sign and its ruler instead. The ruler’s sign and house still connect seventh-house themes to a specific planetary placement in your chart. Different house systems can also move a planet across a cusp, which is why the result states the system used.

7th House vs. Chart Ruler

The chart ruler comes from the Ascendant sign and is often read as a planet that helps describe how you meet the world. The 7th House ruler comes from the Descendant, the sign opposite the Ascendant, and focuses on partnership themes. They are related through the Ascendant–Descendant axis but answer different questions.

Use the Chart Ruler Calculator when you want to compare the ruler of your Rising sign with the ruler of your 7th House.

Does Birth Time Matter?

Yes. The Ascendant and Descendant depend on the time and place of birth, and can change signs during a day. An assumed noon time can create a confident-looking but incorrect 7th House result, so this calculator requires an exact time and selected birthplace.

If you already know your Rising sign from a reliable chart, use the quick lookup near the calculator. It can correctly show the opposite 7th House sign and traditional ruler, but cannot determine an exact Descendant degree, planets in the house or the ruler’s natal house without full birth details.
