What Is Your North Node?

The North Node is one of the two lunar nodes in your birth chart. It is always directly opposite the South Node. Together they describe a developmental axis: the South Node shows familiar patterns and strengths you already know how to use, while the North Node points toward growth, stretch and the direction life keeps inviting you into.

The North Node is not a planet. It is the point where the Moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic moving north, marked with the ☊ symbol in most charts. Still, it is one of the first placements people look up when they want a clearer sense of path — not personality style alone, but where effort tends to matter over time.

If you are asking what your North Node is, you do not need a full chart reading first. Enter your birth details above to find your North Node sign, exact degree and house. The South Node comes with it automatically — the two points are opposite ends of one axis.

How to read your lunar node result

When you get a result, read the layers in order instead of collapsing everything into one sentence:

  • North Node sign — the tone of growth: courage, craft, partnership, visibility and so on.
  • Exact degree — where the node sits inside that sign, especially useful near a sign change.
  • North Node house — the life area where growth concentrates when birth time is known.
  • South Node — the opposite sign (and opposite house): familiar skills, defaults and comfort patterns.
  • True or Mean Node — which version of the North Node your main result is using.

The nodes are not a moral scorecard. South Node strengths still work. North Node growth still takes practice. Use the result as a map of tension and development, then compare it with lived experience rather than treating any placement as a fixed script.

North Node vs. South Node

North Node and South Node are always a pair. Whatever sign and degree your North Node occupies, the South Node sits opposite. You get both ends of the axis together — not a North Node label on its own.

In plain language, North Node describes where effort tends to open new life. South Node describes what already feels natural — sometimes so natural that it becomes a default under stress. A useful reading holds both: keep the South Node skill set, and stretch toward the North Node without shaming the past.

Two short examples help separate the layers. North Node in Leo / South Node in Aquarius can describe growth through creative visibility while the comfort zone prefers group identity, detachment or future-minded ideals. North Node in the 10th house / South Node in the 4th can describe growth through public responsibility while private life and family patterns remain the familiar base.

Reading them together is more useful than isolating either point. The South Node is not a flaw to erase; it is skill and comfort. The North Node is not a demand to become someone else overnight; it is the stretch that keeps development honest.

What Are the Lunar Nodes?

The North Node and South Node are collectively known as the lunar nodes, or Moon's nodes. If you want both ends of the axis — not only one side — you are looking at the same two points this calculator finds.

Astronomically, the nodes are the intersections between the Moon’s orbital plane and the ecliptic — the Sun’s apparent path. When the Moon crosses northward, that intersection is the North Node; the opposite point is the South Node. In astrology those intersections become a birth-chart axis about growth, release, familiarity and direction.

Because the nodes move slowly compared with the Moon or even the Sun, many people can find a reliable North Node sign from birth date alone. Houses are different: they depend on the local sky at birth, so they need time and place. You get both points together — North Node sign and degree, South Node opposite, and houses when birth time and place are known.

True North Node vs. Mean North Node

Not every chart uses the same version of the North Node. The difference is small most of the time, and matters most when you are near a sign change. If two calculators disagree by less than a degree, True vs Mean is often the reason — not a wrong birth date.

  • True Node follows the Moon’s real path at the nodal crossing, including small short-term shifts.
  • Mean Node uses a smoothed average of that path, without the short-term shifts.

You can switch between True Node and Mean Node in the calculator above. Results default to True Node, which many modern Western charts use. After you calculate, you also see both degrees for your chart so you can compare them side by side.

If your True North Node and Mean North Node fall in different signs, your result will say so. That is when the choice matters most — when you were born near a nodal sign change. Pick one version and stay consistent when you compare charts; keep the other degree in mind if the two are close to a sign boundary.

North Node and South Node Symbols

The North Node symbol is ☊. The South Node symbol is ☋. The North Node glyph looks like an upright horseshoe, while the South Node uses the inverted version. Once you recognize the pair, most chart wheels become easier to scan: the nodes are an axis, not two random marks.

In birth charts and astrology software you may also see labels like True Node, Mean Node, NN or North Node of the Moon. They all refer to this same axis. Recognizing ☊ and ☋ is enough to read your result.

North Node Meaning by Zodiac Sign

Every North Node sign has a recognizable growth tone, and every North Node sign pairs with an opposite South Node sign. Use the cards as a quick scan after you calculate — or browse them first if you already know your placement, such as North Node in Leo.

Sign meaning answers “what kind of growth?” House meaning answers “where does it show up?” Read sign first if that is all you have, then add house when you know your birth time. Each card is a short orientation, not a full essay for that sign.

North Node Meaning by House

Sign describes the style of growth. House describes the life area where that growth concentrates. A North Node in Leo in the 10th house does not read the same as North Node in Leo in the 4th — one leans public and vocational, the other private and root-focused. Same sign tone, different stage.

Another pair: North Node in Virgo can emphasize craft and useful devotion wherever it falls, while North Node in the 6th house points that devotion toward work, health and daily systems whether the sign is earthy or fiery. Sign is style; house is terrain.

House results need birth time and birthplace. If those are missing, start with your North Node sign and come back when you have a more precise birth record. The list below is a general guide — your own house comes from the calculator when time and place are known.

How the North Node Calculator Works

We find the lunar nodes from your birth details — not from a Sun-sign shortcut — then show both ends of the axis using True Node or Mean Node, whichever you chose.

Three steps from birth details to lunar nodes:

  1. Enter your birth details — birth date, and birth time plus birthplace when you have them. Choose True Node or Mean Node before you calculate.
  2. Calculate your lunar nodes — we adjust for your birthplace time zone, find your True or Mean North Node with Swiss Ephemeris, place the South Node opposite it, then show the zodiac sign, degree and house.
  3. Read your results — North Node sign, South Node sign, degree, house when available, which node type you used, and a True vs Mean comparison for your chart.

Positions use the tropical zodiac. Houses use the Placidus system when birth time and birthplace are known. Your birth details stay on this device, so you can open the Venus sign calculator, Chiron calculator, and Midheaven calculator without typing everything again.

Do You Need Your Exact Birth Time?

Birth date is required. Birth time is optional for North Node and South Node signs. Birthplace is optional when you do not know the time, and needed with birth time so we can place the chart in the right location and find your houses.

  • With birth date: North Node sign, South Node sign and degrees are available in most cases.
  • Without exact birth time: node houses stay unknown. You can skip birthplace and still get signs from the date.
  • With birth time and birthplace: you get signs, exact degrees and both node houses together, plus True vs Mean comparison.

The lunar nodes usually change signs over months, not hours, so a calendar date is enough for most people asking for their North Node sign. The closer you were born to a nodal sign change — or if you need house placement — the more an exact time helps. Houses can shift about a degree every four minutes, so we only show node houses when the birth time is real.

How Accurate Is This North Node Calculator?

Accuracy depends on solid sky data and the birth details you enter. This calculator is built for Western tropical astrology. You get more than a sign name alone: exact degree, South Node, house when possible, and a clear True or Mean Node choice.

  • Calculation source: Swiss Ephemeris
  • Zodiac: Tropical
  • Node type: True Node or Mean Node
  • House system: Placidus when birth time and birthplace are known
  • Time zone: Taken from your birthplace so local birth time converts correctly
  • Birthplace: City search with map coordinates

If birth time is unknown, node signs and degrees still calculate in most cases, and houses stay blank on purpose. We do not guess a Rising sign just to show a house. If another site disagrees by a fraction of a degree, compare True vs Mean first; if it disagrees by a whole sign near a boundary, check birth time, time zone and which node type each calculator used.
