What Is Your Midheaven Sign?

The Midheaven, commonly abbreviated MC from Medium Coeli, is one of the four angles of a birth chart. In astrology it is commonly associated with career direction, ambitions, public reputation and how a person is seen in professional or public life. In a natal chart it is a chart angle — not a planet — calculated from birth time and birthplace.

Your Midheaven sign is the zodiac sign that angle falls in. Exact degree shows where the MC sits inside the sign; the sign’s ruling planet adds another layer for vocation and public image. Use the free Midheaven calculator above to find your exact MC sign and degree.

What Does Your Midheaven Mean?

Midheaven meaning sits in public life more than private personality. It describes the roles, aims and reputation that form when other people meet your work — career path, public image, professional standing and the longer arc of ambition or calling.

  • Career — the tone of vocational direction, not one permanent job title.
  • Public image — how you tend to be seen in wider or professional settings.
  • Reputation — the story that builds around your contribution over time.
  • Ambition / calling — what “getting somewhere” may feel like for this placement.

Your result pairs MC sign, degree and ruler with a short reading. Treat it as orientation: compare it with skills, timing and the rest of the chart rather than forcing a fixed script.

What Your Midheaven Says About Your Career

Once you have an MC sign, read it in layers instead of hunting for a single job title. The same placement can describe direction, strengths, leadership, reputation, long-term ambition and how you handle recognition — six related questions, not six different charts.

  • Career direction — what kind of work or public contribution fits the MC sign’s tone.
  • Professional strengths — qualities that tend to show when others evaluate your work.
  • Leadership style — how you take responsibility under public eyes.
  • Public reputation — the image that accumulates around your role.
  • Long-term ambition — what lasting success may need to feel like for this MC.
  • Recognition — whether visibility, mastery, care or authority is the currency you notice most.

Examples help more than abstractions. A Leo Midheaven often seeks visible creative leadership and may feel stalled when the work stays invisible. A Capricorn Midheaven often builds authority through structure and time; shortcuts can feel empty even when they pay. A Cancer Midheaven may measure success by whether people feel held. A Virgo Midheaven may measure it by whether the system actually works. A Taurus Midheaven may measure it by what lasts in the hand.

Practical use: take your MC sign as a filter, not a fortune. Ask which roles let that tone operate cleanly, where you overplay it under stress, and which IC themes (private base, home, recovery) need protecting so public ambition does not hollow you out. Keep market reality and the rest of the chart in the room — planets in the 10th, the MC ruler, a possible house or sign stellium, and your lived skills still matter. For which planet weighs heaviest overall, pair the MC with the dominant planet calculator; for growth direction beside vocation, open the North Node calculator.

A simple check after you calculate: write one sentence for career direction, one for how you want to be known, and one for what kind of recognition actually feeds you. If those three sentences disagree with your current path, the Midheaven is pointing at friction worth examining — not at a mandatory title change overnight.

How to Calculate Your Midheaven

To find your Midheaven you need three inputs. Missing any one weakens or blocks a reliable MC:

  • Birth date — the calendar day of birth.
  • Exact birth time — clock time as recorded, not a rough guess if you can help it.
  • Birthplace — the city or place where you were born.

Enter those details above and choose Calculate My Midheaven. You get MC sign, exact degree, ruling planet, the opposite IC, and a short career / public-image reading. No signup required.

Unlike a Sun sign, the Midheaven is not stable from birth date alone. It depends on the sky overhead at the moment and place of birth — that is why exact time is required. If you only need a quick answer to “what is my Midheaven,” the form above is enough: sign, degree and ruler come back together.

Why Your Birth Time Matters

The Midheaven depends on when and where you were born. It moves roughly a degree about every four minutes, so an inaccurate time can shift the MC sign or degree. Exact birth time matters more here than for slow planet signs.

If the certificate is rounded, or family memory disagrees with the official record, treat borderline results carefully. Guessing noon just to force an MC is usually worse than waiting. Birthplace matters too: without it, we cannot put your chart in the right city and time zone.

Without birth time, an exact Midheaven is not reliable. You can still read general MC sign themes, but your personal sign and degree need a real birth time. We will not guess a Rising sign or Midheaven when the time is missing.

Midheaven Signs

Each Midheaven sign has a recognizable career and reputation tone. Use the cards after you calculate, or browse if you already know your MC. Each note is a short orientation, not a full reading for that sign.

Contrast helps. Leo and Capricorn Midheavens both care about public standing, but one leans creative recognition and the other structural authority. Virgo and Pisces both serve, but one through craft and systems, the other through compassion and imagination. Scan your sign, then glance at a neighbor if your degree sits near a sign change.

Midheaven vs. Rising Sign

Rising sign and Midheaven both need birth time, but they answer different questions. Personal manner is not the same as professional reputation.

You can have a soft Rising manner and a hard-driving Midheaven, or the reverse. Read both so face-to-face style and public vocation do not collapse into one label. Treat Rising as first contact; treat MC as career path and reputation over time.

Midheaven vs. the 10th House

It is easy to say “your Midheaven is your 10th house.” That is not precise enough.

The Midheaven and the 10th-house cusp can coincide in some house systems, but they are not conceptually identical in every chart or house system. The Midheaven is an astronomical chart angle. The 10th house is an astrological house — the broader sector of career, status and public responsibility.

Here we use the Placidus house system, where the Midheaven and the 10th-house cusp often match — which is why your result can show both. In other house systems the two can differ. Keep the distinction in mind: the MC is the angle; the 10th house is the broader life area.

Midheaven and IC

The Midheaven always pairs with the IC (Imum Coeli) on the opposite side of the chart. Public culmination and private foundation are one axis.

  • Midheaven (MC) — career path, public image, reputation, outer aims.
  • Imum Coeli (IC) — roots, home base, private life, the ground under public goals.

Your result shows both ends: MC sign and degree, plus IC in the opposite sign at the matching degree. A Capricorn Midheaven with a Cancer IC, for example, often pairs public structure with a private need for emotional home. Career readings work better when that base is included.

How Our Midheaven Calculator Works

We calculate the Midheaven from your birth details — not from a Sun sign shortcut — then show sign, exact degree, ruler and the IC axis.

  1. Look up your birthplace so the chart uses the right location and time zone.
  2. Turn your local birth date and time into a precise moment in time.
  3. Find the Midheaven for that moment and place in the sky.
  4. Translate that position into a tropical zodiac sign and exact degree.
  5. Add the sign's ruling planet and the opposite IC point for your reading.
  6. When birth time and place are known, also show the 10th-house cusp using the Placidus house system.

Positions use Swiss Ephemeris and the Western tropical zodiac — not Vedic or sidereal. Accurate results depend on the birth time and location you enter. Your birth details stay in this browser, so you can open the dominant planet calculator, stellium calculator, and other tools without typing everything again.

If another site disagrees, compare birth time, time zone, house system and zodiac first before assuming either result is simply wrong.
